How Old Is Your Hot Water Bottle?

Tips To Help You Make Sure Your Hot Water Bottle Is Safe To Use

It’s starting to get chilly now, and you may be thinking of searching out your beloved hot water bottle to help keep you warm.

If it’s been a while since you used it, you may want to check it’s safe.

It is time to consider replacing it if it shows any signs of ageing: cracks, splits or discolouration.

If it looks ok, but you’re not sure how old your hottie is, then check the age.

To do this you can look for the manufacturing date code, often imprinted on the bottle itself.

Here's how to do it:

  1. Locate the Date Code

The code is usually found on the back of the bottle or near the neck.

It may be in the form of a daisy wheel or a simple numeric stamp

  1. Interpret the Daisy Wheel

If the hot water bottle has a daisy wheel, here's how to decode it:

Numbers around the edge: Represent the months of the year (1 = January, 12 = December).

Arrow, dot, or notch: Points to the specific month.

Two-digit number in the centre: Represents the year of manufacture (e.g., "23" for 2023).

  1. Look for a Numeric Date Code

Some bottles may have a simple date code like:

MM/YY: E.g., "04/22" means April 2022.

YYYY-MM: E.g., "2022-11" means November 2022.

  1. Hot water bottles usually have a lifespan of 3-5 years

From the date of first use, depending on how often they are used.

Fashy hot water bottles are made from thermoplastic and generally have a longer life span

Advantages of Thermoplastic Hot Water Bottles

Thermoplastic materials are designed to withstand a broader range of temperatures without deforming or breaking down, reducing the risk of overheating.

Durability

They are generally more resistant to wear and tear, cracking, or perishing compared to rubber, especially if stored properly.

Their materials are less likely to degrade over time, meaning they last longer.

Lightweight and Flexible

Thermoplastic bottles are lighter and often more flexible than rubber, making them easier to handle and comfortable to use.

Hygienic Properties

The material is less likely to retain odours or grow mould if cleaned properly

Environmentally Friendly Options

Some thermoplastic bottles are recyclable, making them more eco-friendly compared to synthetic rubber.

Suitable for Allergy Sufferers

Thermoplastic hot water bottles are latex free & odourless
